NISD Food Service Meal Distribution During Closure

Q: Does my child have to be free or reduced pay status to get free meals?
A: Because of NISD Child Nutrition’s partnership with the USDA, all children age 18 and under are eligible for free meals and will be served. Adults do not qualify for meal service at these locations.

Q: Can we pick up breakfast and lunch at the same time?
A: Yes. All locations are currently serving breakfast and lunch at the same time.

Q: How were the sites chosen?
A: NISD and Food Service worked very closely to pick campuses that are centrally located in their municipalities to reach as many students as possible.

Q: How are you planning for meals without waste?
A: NISD Food Service is working diligently to limit food waste during this time. Our kitchen managers have adopted a “cook as we go” plan so we are able to feed students with very little leftover items at the end of a service. Due to our efforts to not waste food, this may slow down the pickup lines as we prepare more food. Please be patient as we continue to fine tune our process during this difficult time.

Q: Will the availability of the free meal pickup change?
A: We are working closely with the administration of NISD to monitor the need for any changes in availability. NISD will make announcements should there be any updates or changes.

Q: Are you going to publish menus during the school closing?
A: Currently we do not plan to publish menus during the school closure. The availability of some products has slowed and we are having to make daily menu changes to ensure your student receives the FDA’s recommended nutritional requirements.

Q: What steps are you taking to ensure your staff is healthy during this time?
A: Our kitchen staff are following the current CDC guidelines for COVID-19. Wellness standards, extra hand washing and glove changes, and social distancing are in practice as part of our ongoing commitment to safety and wellness during this uncertain time.
