At their Feb. 13 school board meeting, Northwest ISD trustees approved the district’s 2017-18 calendar as recommended by the District Education Improvement Council, a committee composed of parents, teachers and administrators.

For two weeks in January, community members, staff and students had an opportunity to vote and provide feedback for the 2017-18 school calendar. From the 3,300 responses, the majority – 1,658 voters – supported calendar option 3, which ended the semester on Friday, Dec. 22, and started the second semester on Monday, Jan. 8.

The DEIC reviewed and considered all feedback from the survey. With a focus on what is educationally best for all students, the council modified calendar option 3 for their final recommendation to the school board at the Jan. 23 school board meeting. The modifications included:

  • Teachers return to work on Monday, Jan. 8 for a workday.
  • Students start the second semester on Tuesday, Jan. 9
  • To meet Texas Education Code’s requirement of 75,600 minutes of instruction, the calendar was modified from three inclement weather days to two. Two inclement weather days are required by the state.
  • There will be six early release days instead of five: Oct. 6, Dec. 21 and 22, Feb. 16, May 31, and June 1.

The 2017-18 school calendar contains 173 instructional days totaling 76,000 minutes with a 440-minute school day. The first day of school is Monday, Aug. 28, and the last day is Thursday, June 1.
