Eaton High School’s current issues team walked away from the UIL Academic State Meet with silver medals, and one if its team members earned an additional silver medal in the individual competition.

The team, composed of Zack Flowers, Avery Nennmann, Nathan Newton and Zach Sheehan, finished second in the 5A classification with a score of 99 points, just behind the state champion’s score of 107. Nathan also earned a silver in the individual current events competition, earning runner-up honors with a score of 43, compared to the state champion’s 47. The finishes mark the first time Eaton, which has been open for three years, has placed among the top three in any event at the academic state meet.

This was the second consecutive year the team competed in the state meet, and it was also the second consecutive year Nathan competed in the meet as an individual. In 2017, the team finished fourth and Nathan finished sixth.

Eaton’s current issues team is led by the guidance of David Wolf, faculty advisor.
