Defy employees accept their award

Defy, a student-run company from Northwest ISD’s Academy of Business Management & Entrepreneurship, received second place honors in the Junior Achievement Company of the Year contest, receiving the honor at the National Leadership Summit on June 20.

Junior Achievement annually names its top national student-run businesses through its Company of the Year program. Defy was founded in 2017 and creates science-inspired jewelry and accessories to empower young girls in STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The company has partnered with the University of North Texas Society of Women Engineers chapter to help girls go to job fairs, engineering conferences and more.

Defy’s award marks the second consecutive year the business academy has earned honors in the Company of the Year contest. In 2017, two companies run by its students – Feel the Color and CHAAO – earned awards in the competition.

Students companies in the business academy are provided guidance by Estie Cuellar, academy instructor, and the Junior Achievement of the Chisholm Trail branch.
