Medlin Middle School and Thompson Elementary School have each qualified a Destination Imagination team for the Global Finals of the problem-solving competition following their performances at the state meet.

On Saturday, March 23, students from across Texas arrived in Corpus Christi for the Destination Imagination State Tournament. Seven teams from Northwest ISD were invited to participate after qualifying at the Greater Fort Worth Regional Tournament in February.

There are roughly 4,000 Destination Imagination teams in Texas, and more than 900 compete at the state competition, consisting of at least 20 teams in each division. The top four to six teams in each division advance to Global Finals. Students from Northwest ISD’s Granger, Lakeview and Thompson elementary schools and Medlin Middle School competed in both the central challenge and instant challenge at the tournament.

Medlin and Thompson’s qualifying teams, along with thousands of others from across the world, will travel to Kansas City, Missouri, from May 22-25 for the Global Finals, the world’s largest celebration of creativity and problem-solving.

The Medlin team, “Wombats in Spanish,” finished sixth in its competition. The team consists of Gwen Baxter, Reagan Ellis, Ryder Fine, Andrew Golden, Ian Hill and Kurt Ippolito. They are managed by Laurie Baxter.

Thompson’s advancing team, “Too Legit to Quit!,” finished in fourth in its competition. The team consists of Frankie Garza, Jackson Macheca, Jaden Medlen, Elijah Smith, Isley Stanley, David Strong and Brianna Zalskey. They are managed by Marcie Conrad and Katherine Medlen.
