The Foundation for Music Education has awarded wind ensembles from Pike and Wilson middle schools with the 2019 Mark of Excellence, a top national distinction in their field.

Pike and Wilson’s wind ensembles earned the commended honors status as part of the National Wind Band Honors Project, an annual list of top wind ensembles in the United States. This year’s competition saw more than 320 entries across five categories from across 38 states, with just a quarter receiving national winner status and a quarter receiving commended honors status.

Jack Forbis leads the Pike wind ensemble with the assistance of Jennifer Haden, while Ray Hilley leads the Wilson wind ensemble with the assistance of Chad Waterman.

A four-person panel of top musical professionals judged entrants. Groups will receive recorded and written comments from the judges along with a compilation of recordings of national winners.
