Byron Nelson High School’s varsity cheerleading squad earned third place in the National Cheerleaders Association’s High School Nationals competition, the second time in a matter of weeks the group has earned a top-three finish in a prestigious championship.

The Bobcats competed in the game day large varsity category for squads with 21 to 30 members, finishing with a total score of 143.6 out of a possible 150 max score. They finished just behind two fellow Texas squads, the Katy Seven Lakes Spartans (who scored 147) and Flower Mound Marcus Marauders (who scored 145.1).

Byron Nelson received zero deductions, earning the full performance score possible of 95.7333. In its category, teams perform crowd-leading routines similar to those used during pep rallies or on the sidelines of games. Each routine lasts one minute, with categories including cheer, fight song and band chant performances.

Held in Dallas on Feb. 1 and 2, the NCA High School Nationals is considered one of the top events of its kind in the United States. The governing association was formed in 1948 and is widely credited with several key influences in cheerleading. Each year, thousands of student-athletes and spectators from across the country participate in or watch its competitions.
