Northwest ISD’s curriculum team has selected the district’s elementary Writers of the Month for January 2020, honoring three students for their academic capabilities.

This month’s honorees include Hollis Conner from Cox Elementary SchoolKynleigh Kaparoff from Granger Elementary School and Estelle Ndjibu from Hughes Elementary School. Each writer selected his or her favorite recent work to highlight for the award.

Hollis recently wrote a short story about a young girl who received a package she had been waiting for. She said this year taught her to add details to her stories to help readers visualize what’s happening. Kynleigh recently wrote an essay about how she admires Emma Watson as both an actor and person. She said that writing with a “hook” entices readers and makes written works exciting. Estelle recently wrote a short story about a day in her personal life visiting a big event. She said she likes to write made-up stories but also use what’s happened in her life as inspiration.

The district’s literacy coaches work with a group of campus teachers and administrators to select students who show exemplary writing performance or tremendous growth as writers. After students are chosen, each is asked to select his or her favorite work of writing and explain why that work was chosen.

Students are recognized by district educators as well as through the Northwest ISD English Language Arts program with a certificate of achievement.
