Northwest ISD’s curriculum team has selected the district’s elementary Writers of the Month for November 2017, honoring four students for their academic capabilities.

This month’s honorees include Emily Canas from Hatfield Elementary School, Alina McLane from Nance Elementary School, Christine Nguyen from Cox Elementary School and Amelia Ryan from Prairie View Elementary School. Each writer selected her favorite recent work to highlight for the award.

Emily said writers need to “add lots of details and stay on topic” to write well. Alina said her work reflected the use of “deep thinking about the characters.” Christine said she used feedback from teachers and peers to make her work better. Amelia said she chose her work to highlight because she loved the book she wrote about, “Wonder,” which was recently adapted to a movie.

The district’s literacy coaches work with a group of campus teachers and administrators to select students who show exemplary writing performance or tremendous growth as writers. After students are chosen, each is asked to select his or her favorite work of writing and explain why that work was chosen.

Students are recognized to district educators as well as through the Northwest ISD English Language Arts program with a certificate of achievement.
