Eaton High School’s current issues team has advanced to the University Interscholastic League’s Academic State Meet, as has one of its members as an individual contestant.

The Eaton team finished first in the current issues event at the UIL 5A Region I academic meet, punching its ticket to state. Additionally, team member Nathan Newton advanced as a contestant in the individual current issues competition by finishing second at the regional meet.

This is the second consecutive year Eaton’s current issues team has advanced to state.

In addition to Eaton’s current issues team, one Northwest and two Eaton students earned points for their schools at the regional academic meet in individual events. From Northwest High School, Derek Maynard earned points in the computer applications individual event at the regional academic meet by finishing fourth. Eaton’s Gillian Bumgarner and Morgan Washington tied for fourth in the spelling and vocabulary individual event to earn the school points. By finishing fourth, the trio are all state alternates.

Eaton will soon find out if another of its teams has advanced to state, as the Eagles’ one-act play company will perform at their regional meet today, April 16.

The UIL Academic State Meet will take place May 4-5 at the University of Texas at Austin. For more information about the state meet, click here.
