A student wins an award at Speeding to Read

Three Northwest ISD elementary schools – Cox, Hatfield and Justin – recently read thousands of books as part of Texas Motor Speedway’s annual Speeding to Read competition, with students and teachers notching several awards at the event’s recent prize ceremony.

Northwest ISD’s schools were joined by seven schools from other area districts in the competition, and the 10 schools combined to read nearly 700,000 books during the 2016-17 academic year. Students set lofty book-reading goals in their classes for the competition, and each Northwest ISD schools surpassed 65 percent of their student enrollment meeting or exceeding those individual goals.

Justin Elementary led the district’s schools in the competition, winning the frontstretch division at 91.9 percent. It was followed by Hatfield Elementary at 80.3 percent and Cox Elementary at 65 percent.

Cox was represented in the competition by the overall kindergarten champion, Ellie Evans, who read 2,219 books during the school year. The school was also awarded with the competition’s overall most improved reader in the kindergarten to second-grade category, first-grader Savannah Henderson.

Northwest ISD also earned both classroom champions in the frontstretch division. Justin’s Cindy Clement won the kindergarten to second-grade category with her kindergarten class. Cox’s Kurt Jeffrey won the third- to fifth-grade category with his third-grade class.

Individual and classroom champions for each school are as follows:

  • Cox: Ellie Evans, kindergarten to second-grade individual; Ryleigh McHenry, third- to fifth-grade individual; Julieanne Orr, kindergarten to second-grade classroom; Kurt Jeffrey, third- to fifth-grade classroom
  • Hatfield: Kylie Jenkins, kindergarten to second-grade individual; Rory Owens, third- to fifth-grade individual; Kristin Daugherty, kindergarten to second-grade classroom; Megan Donovan, third- to fifth-grade classroom
  • Justin: Addyson Heathcock, kindergarten to second-grade individual; Kristen Fernandez, third- to fifth-grade individual; Cindy Clement, kindergarten to second-grade classroom; Julie Gavin, third- to fifth-grade classroom
