Northwest ISD’s curriculum team has selected the district’s elementary Writers of the Month for January 2018, honoring four students for their academic capabilities.

This month’s honorees include Sydney Ledbetter from Granger Elementary School, Aamaya Smith from Love Elementary School and Sam Foley from Sendera Ranch Elementary School. Each writer selected his or her favorite recent work to highlight for the award.

Sydney was chosen for her fiction piece that tells the story of young children who are trained to control the weather and prevent catastrophes from occurring. Aamaya was selected for her essay about Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, a Spanish explorer who survived in the wilderness by learning Native American languages and healing abilities. Sam was chosen for a story about an adventure driving a four-wheeler.

The district’s literacy coaches work with a group of campus teachers and administrators to select students who show exemplary writing performance or tremendous growth as writers. After students are chosen, each is asked to select his or her favorite work of writing and explain why that work was chosen.

Students are recognized to district educators as well as through the Northwest ISD English Language Arts program with a certificate of achievement.
