Northwest ISD’s curriculum team has selected the district’s elementary Writers of the Month for February 2018, honoring two students for their academic capabilities.

This month’s honorees include Mason Bunch from Hughes Elementary School and Hailyn Cheney from Seven Hills Elementary School. Each writer selected her favorite recent work to highlight for the award.

Mason was chosen for her fiction piece about a panda in a church. She said she wrote the story with the goal of creating an emotional piece for readers, hoping to make a positive impact. Hailyn was selected for her historical fiction diary about traveling in 1849 as part of the gold rush. She said the diary was written with the idea that consequences had to be included for the rough trek, to make the story realistic.

The district’s literacy coaches work with a group of campus teachers and administrators to select students who show exemplary writing performance or tremendous growth as writers. After students are chosen, each is asked to select his or her favorite work of writing and explain why that work was chosen.

Students are recognized by district educators as well as through the Northwest ISD English Language Arts program with a certificate of achievement.
