To earn National Merit distinction, students must score among the top in the state or nation on the PSAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test during their junior year of high school. The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes students who are among the roughly 16,000 top scorers as Semifinalists, while students among the roughly 34,000 top scorers earn Commended status.
