After months of redesigning the current format of the Northwest ISD website, the district’s online home is visibly updated to match its physical growth. On July 1, Northwest ISD’s new website went live for the first time.

In a newsletter sent by Superintendent Karen G. Rue, Ed.D., the importance of the site to students, staff, and parents was detailed in that the website ranks as the fourth preferred method of communication for district families. Parent surveys indicate one of the most valued communication tools for NISD families are district and campus websites:

  • 82% of parents find teacher websites provide adequate information about learning and activities.
  • 98% of parents have Internet at home.
  • 93% feel the website is a valuable communication tool for notifying parents of emergencies.

After establishing a committee comprised of administrators, staff, parents, and community members in March of 2016, the process of the redesign began. Northwest ISD campus webmasters and technology liaisons were trained and prepared for the website data migration from the old site to the new that began in April. Teachers and staff began to update their information, and their web pages were established as all data had been moved to the new site.

Of the numerous changes to the site, there were three major alterations to the district’s new online database:

  1. The home page and the color coded tabs makes it accessible for parents, students, staff, and community members to be able to choose how the site would be more beneficial to them and how they navigate through the web page. This also brings the user to the popular links tab for each specific community as well. For example, a parent of a Northwest student could easily access the school closings information through the popular links on the ‘Parents’ tab.
  2. Another new facet to the district’s new look is the ‘Community’ dashboard located on the home page. This opens up to demographic information, the partners in education the district pairs with, and various other facts and figures pertinent to the community, such as the PTA Council, the Gold Card Program, and bond updates.
  3. Perhaps the most requested and important change to the site migration is the creation of brand new campus websites.  Each individual campus now has their own place on the district’s website, accessible by the drop down mega-menu toolbar on the home page. The campus pages provide up-to-date information specific to each campus, such as upcoming events and important news, with a featured section for district news on the home page.

“One of NISD’s goals is to provide timely, open communication and positive parental and community partnership opportunities in our schools,” said Director of Communications Emily Conklin. “The district’s new digital look directly supports the district’s improvement plan and strategic goals as well as meets the needs requested by parents for a site that communicates effectively with concise, easy-to-find information and consistent across the board.”

“The new site is so easy to use now, and I love that,” said NISD’s Council of PTAs President Joy Harrison. Harrison additionally served on the website redesign committee. “I appreciated the representation of parents and community members during this redesign process. The site is user-friendly, and I can easily find everything I need.”

In order to ease the transition into the new website, the district is offering Website Wednesdays through the months of July and August as a way to familiarize staff and faculty with their new online surroundings. With over 2.5 million visits to the district website in the past year, the new online presence is an excellent complement to the area’s budding community.

The communications department is now working on a new mobile app that mirrors the progression of the desktop site. The redesigned mobile app will be available on Apple and Android devices early this fall.
