5:23 p.m. May 29 Update: Northwest ISD would like to thank all first responders for their efforts keeping students safe. The following letter was emailed to Justin Elementary families.

Dear Justin Elementary School families,

I’m writing today to keep you informed about an accident involving one of our buses that led to seven students sustaining minor injuries. At about 3:15 p.m. today, a bus transporting 18 students from Justin Elementary was involved in accident at Bill Cook Lane and F.M. 407 that turned the bus on its side.

All of our students were immediately inspected at the scene, and seven students who exhibited minor injuries were transported to a local hospital. Please be aware that because of federal privacy laws, I cannot share any more information about any student’s health situation than this with you.

Durham, the district’s transportation service provider, immediately began contacting families as soon as the accident was reported. After students were inspected, any student who was not transported to the hospital was transported back to Justin Elementary on a separate bus, where they were reunited with family members.

This is obviously a scary situation for all students involved, and I want you to know that your students mean the world to myself and our entire staff. I’m extremely thankful there were no serious injuries, and everyone involved is in my thoughts. If any students need counseling assistance regarding the incident, our staff is on hand to assist in any way we can.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is in the process of investigating the accident, but we will do our best to answer any questions we can if you contact our front office at 817-215-0800.

Regards,

Lisa Ransleben, Ed.D.
Principal, Justin Elementary School

7:40 a.m. May 30 Update: The following updated statement has been sent to media outlets:

Northwest ISD is extremely appreciative for the assistance from the first responders from the bus accident yesterday afternoon. The seven students transported to local hospitals have been released as of yesterday evening. We are very grateful the outcome of yesterday’s accident was not worse. Below is a letter sent by Superintendent Dr. Ryder Warren yesterday evening to families:

NISD Parents and Supporters,

I know many of you have heard or read about the bus accident by now, but I wanted to update everyone.  Dr. Lisa Ransleben, principal of Justin Elementary School, is updating all Justin families as well.  We had a bus involved in an accident on the north side of the district - just west of Justin.  The bus rolled onto its side, and we had several students hurt and all on board were very scared.  Seven students were sent to area hospitals to get checked out. While we have not received word of any major injuries, five of those students were unfortunately hurt.

I cannot thank the Justin Elementary family enough for the support given to our kids and families.  I also appreciate the efforts of all of the first responders on scene today giving care. This is one of those situations that we hope never happens, but we are so grateful and blessed that the outcome wasn't worse.   Please say a prayer or have a positive thought for the students and families involved, and we will be working with the families to make sure these kids are supported for the remainder of this week and beyond.  Thank you for your support!

Ryder Warren, Superintendent of Schools
