Northwest ISD’s curriculum team has selected the district’s elementary Writers of the Month for December 2017, honoring four students for their academic capabilities.

This month’s honorees include Paige Anderson from Schluter Elementary School, Sydney Anderson from Thompson Elementary School, Briley Bufe from Justin Elementary School and D.J. Neal from Roanoke Elementary School. Each writer selected his or her favorite recent work to highlight for the award.

Paige wrote about her experience meeting a “Minecraft” YouTube streamer, which she said “makes me smile.” Sydney said her writing was fun to make because it “included a lot of describing words and phrases, and I wrote about my feelings.” Briley chose her writing “because I like to read narratives to my little sister,” and the story she chose included fun sound effects. D.J. wrote about the “Woods Runner” book because he is passionate about it and he is “always excited to share my love for ‘Woods Runner’ with other people.”

The district’s literacy coaches work with a group of campus teachers and administrators to select students who show exemplary writing performance or tremendous growth as writers. After students are chosen, each is asked to select his or her favorite work of writing and explain why that work was chosen.

Students are recognized to district educators as well as through the Northwest ISD English Language Arts program with a certificate of achievement.
