Byron Nelson High School rising senior Haniyah Burney earned a perfect score of 36 on the ACT exam, placing her among the top test-takers in the nation.

With her score, Haniyah is among the top 0.1 percent of students who take the ACT. The ACT is one of the two commonly accepted college entrance exams, the other being the SAT. Nearly 2 million students take the ACT annually.

Haniyah said she hadn’t planned to take the ACT, but her mother encouraged her to take the test.

“I had already taken the SAT and gotten a score I was fine with, but my mom said I should take the ACT at least once,” Haniyah said. “When I received my ACT score, it really threw me off, but in a good way. My mom started laughing and was really, really happy – but she was quick to say ‘I told you so.’ Now she’s sure to tell me mother knows best.”

Haniyah, who is ranked among the top students in Byron Nelson’s Class of 2018, plans to major in sociology in college and possibly earn a double-major in a science-related field. She hopes to attend Stanford University.
