There’s a new bear in town, and his name is Boomer. Students at Berkshire Elementary had the exciting opportunity to voice their ideas and vote to find the perfect name for their new mascot.

The naming process took three weeks. During the first week, every classroom at Berkshire chose a name for the bear. During the second week, students voted to narrow the list down to one chosen name per grade level. Then, for the final week of voting, students voted between the six remaining names, and “Boomer” came out on top.

When the mascot arrived on campus, students were overjoyed.

“I like when Boomer gives high-fives and dances,” said kindergarten student Izzy Potter. “And seeing him just makes me smile.”

On Friday mornings, Boomer can be found greeting students as they walk in the doors.

“At Berkshire, we work hard to play harder, and Boomer encourages that and lifts everyone’s spirits,” said Berkshire Principal Justin Vercher.

Kindergarten teacher Jaclyn Welch said she is proud of the culture being built at Berkshire and the part Boomer plays in that.

“Seeing the students come in the building with big smiles, student leaders helping younger kids find their way to class, music playing in the doorway, and Boomer there to greet everyone on a Friday morning,” she said. “What a positive start to the day!”
