V.R. Eaton High School senior Kate Staley took second place at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association (THSWPA) championship in the 165-weight class division in a very challenging field of 13 other powerlifters on March 18 at the American Bank Center Arena in Corpus Christi.

Staley secured second place in the 6A state meet lifting 155 pounds in the bench press, 345 pounds in the deadlift and 380 pounds in the squat, recording an overall total of 880 pounds. All after being introduced to the sport of power lifting a mere eight months ago.

“After quarantine restrictions were lifted, I started working at a gym with my brother who lifted every day,” said Staley. “I began lifting with him and fell in love with powerlifting and the feeling it gave me.”

Having never competed at the state level before, Staley knew her competition would have an advantage.

“Receiving second at state was a huge accomplishment because I’ve never competed before at that level, she said. “Even though I didn’t end up in first place, it just gives me more motivation to work harder than before.”

Next year, the Eaton Eagle senior hopes to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Weatherford College.

“My success has come from my dedication and love for the sport but also from the people around me who consistently support me,” Staley said. “My brother Jake has been my biggest motivator and best friend.  All of these reasons give me the motivation to walk into the gym daily and train with a purpose.”
